Christmas is coming!

Writer's picture: Auto-OutAuto-Out

Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat

Please put a penny in the old man's hat

If you haven't got a penny, a ha'penny will do

If you haven't got a ha'penny, then God bless you!

-English Christmas round song

Christmas season is here! Decorating, shopping, caroling, parties, and the time of year when many organizations request charitable gifts and donations. Several years ago, not knowing what to give to my Father in Law for Christmas, we decided to make a donation in his name to an organization that he was personally involved with and loved. He was thrilled! He even called us to thank us afterwards as he was so happy about it.

I have often heard others moan about how hard it is to find gifts for some people. When I can, I try to steer them towards donations and gifts to charities. Some love the idea as it’s a way of giving back as well as showing someone how much you love them.

Others not so much, for various reasons. Either way, I mention that any gift/donation no matter how large or small helps and is appreciated.

You see, many years ago I was a volunteer for a national non-profit outreach ministry, and some years after that I worked in the Civic & Charitable Contributions department of a major airline. Having worked on both sides, I know full well how even a $5 gift can and does help.

From sending a child to camp, assisting in research, or even providing meals or clothing for those who’ve faced disasters like a fire, it’s all needed and appreciated by those on the receiving end.

This Christmas if you are faced with giving a gift to someone who is impossible to buy for, then don’t buy anything! Please consider gifting to their (or your) favorite non-profit organization, and do so in their name. You won’t regret it and they will love it!
